This massive head is but a part of a great horseshoe shaped grotto. Carved out of the mountain at Baoding , are more than 15, 000 figures, that tell the story of six paths to reincarnation, in Buddhist tradition.  The work here began in the Song Dynasty in 1133A.D. and took twenty-nine years  to finish. Buddhist sculptures are usually quite massive and face frontally.
