While congress initially opposed the efforts of the Underground Railroad with the Fugitive Slave Law , there was a gradual but insurmountable change of hearts and minds of senators and congressmen that led to the establishment of the Freedmens Bureau after the Civil War, and eventually to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These actions, it can be said, continued the work of the Underground Railroad by helping Black Americans in their struggle to achieve their rightful position in our society.
