JIM McALEESE
Ireland is a land where oral stories are passed down through many generations. Jim McAleese is a second-generation Irishman who became interested in learning Irish history and myths after a visit to Ireland to trace his ancestral roots. His travel led to an awakening of respect and pride in the rich traditions and heritage of that small but wonderful isle.
Like many who value their ethnic ancestry, Jim joined a cultural club that supports and honors the traditions of his family's native land. He is a member of the Northeast Philadelphia chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, A.O.H. Jim says the name Hibernia is a name given to Ireland by the early Romans and refers to winter, or land of cold, in Latin. Jim also says that his name, McAleese in Gaelic, a language native to Ireland, means follower of the cross.
If you want to know more about Irish history and traditions this is a man to talk to. He is the historian for his A.O.H. chapter and keeps all the club's members, and anyone else who is interested, enthralled with his stories and quick wit. Jim has graciously made an audio-tape for us to hear about Ireland in the best oral traditions of the Emerald Isle.
