Module 11 : Levels of Technology Integration
Readings
Aiming for Integration

This module is designed to take a look back at what we have discussed so far and to help you focus on the curriculum project. First, read through the Moersch article and the LoTI Framework. Let the levels of technology be a checkpoint against which you can measure your own curriculum projects. We are striving for no less than level 4 - Integration for your projects.

To make sure you are on the right track and have truly begun thinking in new ways with regards to integrating the Internet throughout your curriculum, take a half hour to complete this Learning With Technology Profile Tool from the North Carolina Regional Education Laboratory.

The other guiding principle should be the national and state standards. As usual on the Web, there are others who have gone before. Each of the following resources have been developed specifically to find high quality materials that help students to achieve the standards.

  • McREL Standards Database
Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) has developed a database of both national and state standards in all of the curriculum areas. (not Delaware yet) They've also collected links to curriculum materials around the web and linked those to the standards.
  • MCI MarcoPolo
According to their own description, MCI MarcoPolo provides "a simple means to navigate the uncharted world of the Internet and move swiftly and efficiently to a portfolio of high-quality Web sites that students can learn from and teachers and parents can trust. MCI MarcoPolo also provides lesson plans created by teachers, for teachers. These detailed learning guides can be woven into current lessons and can spur new projects using Internet-based learning strategies."

  1. Essay on Using the Internet in the Classroom

Throughout this class, you have reviewed many uses of the Web in the classroom. You've also read articles expressing various viewpoints on the value of different approaches. The first of these was the article from the very first module on Harnessing the Web. You have also begun to create your own Web-based unit.

Drawing on all of these experiences as well as your professional background, create an essay reflecting on what you consider the best uses of the Internet in the classroom for the age level you work with. You should also include your thoughts on any impediments you view such as classroom management, equity, learning styles and other issues.

This is a formal essay which should include references with appropriate citations to provide examples of the things you mention and to substantiate claims you make in your essay.

Publish your essay using the template provided or your own page. Link it to your assignment page. Record the URL in the WebCT Discussion Forum under the appropriate heading.
