Discussion

The discussion was organized around the elements of the outline that was developed at the last meeting.

  • Essential Preconditions
    • Richard Davis gave an overview of the 3 elements of computing in the district:

      • Networks/servers -- This was provided through state money managed by DCET. Additional instructional servers are being installed in each school at this time.
      • LANs -- Currently there are administrative servers in all schools and instructional servers are being added. Each school will be deciding what the appropriate use for those servers is.
      • Labs and classrooms -- All schools have computer labs because of different historical paths. In addition, all classrooms have at least one computer purchased through the state funding.

    • To inform our discusions going forward, Richard will provide the group with an overview of the labs, classroom computers and personnel are deployed in each school. This will be a very broad-brush picture so that we have a starting point for discussions.

    • Richard announced that he and his staff will be providing web site for support of computer users in each building. A rough version will be up shortly with a more fully developed version online by the end of 2000.

    • The idea of stipend positions for providing building level tech support was explored. This may become a recommendation of the group after further consideration.

  • Standards and Guidelines (develop, adopt or adapt)
    • The NETS for Students handbook and the Cape K-8 Computer Skills Scope and Sequence was distributed. Since the NETS are national standards and much support material exists and more is being developed, it seemed reasonable to use these standards for Cape's curriculum guidelines.

    • Members of the committee took both books and agreed to report on the following questions at the next meeting: For your grade level, does the NETS material subsume the Cape plan? What is missing?

      • K-2: Kathy O'Hanlon
      • 3-5: Mary Beth and Lori
      • 6-8: Scott and Don
      • 9-12: Sharon and Corey

  • Plan for integration with curriculum to ensure progress in both areas
    • Cape has recently developed curriculum plans aligned to the Delaware standards. These were distributed to members of the group. In the discussion, it was agreed that we need to create something that will really help teachers use technology to meet all of their instructional goals. The question remains how is that best done in the existing framework.

    • For next meeting, each person is looking at the curricular guides in their own level to decide what approach is most useful for integrating with the curricular area. Also, what other people are needed on the committee to carry out this work.

      • K-2: Kathy O'Hanlon
      • 3-5: Mary Beth and Lori
      • 6-8: Scott and Don
      • 9-12: Sharon and Corey

Still to be discussed

  • Plan how teachers get skills and how they will know they have them.

  • Evaluation and assessment

  • Plan for ongoing reviews
