Tips for Presenters

You must supply your own laptop computer for your presentation. Make sure you know where to attach your laptop computer to the LCD video projector connection in the room in which you are presenting. The presentation rooms will not have a live Internet connection.

Structuring Your Paper into a Presentation

  • You have something to share with SIGUCCS participants, and they want to hear it. Outline the main ideas of your paper and decide how best to present them.
  • To enhance your presentation, create visuals. Limit the amount of information on one screen to a single main idea.
  • The text you use should be large and legible to those sitting in the rear of the room.
  • To supplement your discussion, bring relevant handouts.
  • Practice your presentation in front of an audience before you come to Richmond. You will feel more comfortable with your content and your delivery.
  • Before you come to the Conference, review your session's co-presenter's paper(s), so you will know the other presentation topic(s) and how they do (or do not) fit together with your topic. You may wish to discuss any overlap or differences ahead of time to facilitate a smoother session and set the stage for a productive discussion with your audience.
  • Pace yourself to stay within the allotted time.
  • Decide in advance how you will handle questions that arise during your presentation.
  • Plan some questions that your Session Chair can use to facilitate the discussion about your topic.

When You Arrive at the Conference in Richmond

  • Pick up your packet at the Registration Desk, review the Conference Program, and determine the location and time for your presentation.
  • Attend the appropriate speakers' breakfast and introduce yourself to your Session Chair.
