Installing Mac PPP for Open Transport

(for Power Macintosh 7200, 7500, 8500, 9500, and newer models only)

The UDel Mac IP Installer contains everything you need for PPP. It is available for copying at the Technology Solutions Center, 002b Smith Hall; from the UD Home Page at URL http://www.udel.edu/eileen/sw, or by anonymous FTP on the host fiesta.tsc.udel.edu in the file: /pub/internet/mac/ud-macip-install-X.X.X.-opentran.hqx where X.X.X. is the most current version number.

This file is a binhexed, self-extracting file and must be decoded before using it on your Macintosh. If you do not understand how to do this, call the Consulting Help Center at 831-6000 or visit the TSC where you can receive the installer on disk.

The following instructions are for Macintoshes running System 7.5.2 or greater. If you are not running System 7.5.2, contact the TSC for further instructions. A machine that is unable to run System 7.X will not be very useable for PPP access.

Double-click on the installer and follow the instructions that come with it. After you have finished the installation, reboot your machine.

Configuring Open Transport

  1. Open the TCP/IP Control Panel from the Control Panels menu under the Apple menu.

  2. Fill in the fields in the TCP/IP window as follows:

    1. Pull down the "Connect Via:" menu and select "MacPPP". Make sure "Manually" is showing in the "Configure:" pull-down box.

    2. Make sure the IP Address and the Subnet Mask boxes are both blank.

    3. In the "Domain name" box, type

      udel.edu

In the "Router address:" box, type

      128.175.13.1

In the "Name server addr.:" box, type

      128.175.13.92

Configuring MacPPP

  1. Open the "Config PPP" control panel from the Control Panels menu under the Apple menu.

  2. Most of the parameters you need to connect to the UDel PPP service have been preset for you. Leave most of the default settings for now.

  3. The "PPP Server:" pull down box should show "UDel".

  4. Click on the button labeled "Config..." in the lower left corner.

You will get the PPP Server dialog box.

  5. You can change the phone number in this box if you are not calling from the local area, or need to dial a prefix to get an outside line. If you have a pulse dial phone you will need to check the "Pulse Dial" radio button. The modem init, port speed and flow control are set for a USRobotics Sportster 28.8 modem communicating at 14.4 K baud. This may or may not work on other brands of modems. Contact the IT Help Center at 831-6000 if you have problems connecting.

  6. Click the "Done" button to close this dialog box.

  7. Click the close box at the top left of the "Config PPP" control panel window.

  8. Reboot the Macintosh.

  9. To test the configuration, open the Config PPP control panel and click on the "Open PPP" button. You should get a dialog box asking for your name and password and then a status screen showing the attempted connection. Finally, you should get a message indicating the connection has been established.
Next, try a TCP/IP application like Netscape or Fetch.

To close the connection, click on the "Soft Close" button in the Config PPP control panel.

Once you've completed configuration, you can begin your PPP session either by clicking on the "Open" button in the Config PPP Control Panel or by launching an application that uses TCP/IP.
