Installing OnNet 2.1 and PPP under Windows 3.1
Introduction
To use PPP, you need software called OnNet 2.1. OnNet installs a PPP
driver on your computer that will allow you to establish a PPP connection to
the University. This document explains how to install OnNet version 2.1 under
Windows 3.1.
To get the OnNet Windows files, bring 14 high-density diskettes to the
Technology Solutions Center (TSC) in 002 Smith Hall.
Note: OnNet installs the Mosaic World Wide Web browser on your computer.
If you wish to use a browser for secure transactions (e.g., viewing SIS or
other University personal information on the web), pick up a copy of the
Netscape browser when you get OnNet. To get Netscape, you will need to bring
2 additional high-density diskettes.
You can also pick up the software at the following computing sites: 116 Pearson Hall, Harrington, Morris Library, McDowell or Dickinson.
Taking your computer home and bringing it back on campus? If you are taking your computer off campus, we strongly recommend that you do not reconfigure your OnNet installation so that you can use PPP. You will have to restore that installation
when you return to your residence hall room and use your Ethernet connection.
Use
Kermit instead.
If you do decide to reconfigure for PPP, please do the following to save your current configurations BEFORE you install PPP:
- At the C:\ prompt, type
cd pctcp
- At the C:\pctcp\ prompt, rename your current "pctcp.ini" file. To do this, type
ren pctcp.ini pctcp.ud
After you have renamed the file, install PPP using the instructions below.

Your OnNet connection runs through a script file in your "pctcp" or "onnet"
directory (depending upon what you named the directory). To be sure that your
connection works reliably, you should make one change to the script file. The script file will be called "conn0001.scr" or "conn0002.scr," depending upon how many you have. You will need to edit all the "connxxxx.scr" files.
- Move to the end of the script file. The end of the file looks like this:
***********************
Change Into Packet Mode
***********************
(to packet)
***********************
Terminate The Script
***********************
- Immediately before the line "to packet," add the following:
(pause,10000)
- Save and exit the script file.

The Netscape disks contain the Netscape installation files. You
will create a directory called "ns", on your C Drive, copy the files from both
Netscape disks to that directory, start Windows, and run setup:
- Type these two commands, pressing the ENTER key after each:
md c:\ns
cd c:\ns
- Insert the first Netscape disk into Drive A; type
copy a:\*.*
and press ENTER. (Remove the disk.)
- Insert the second Netscape disk into Drive A; type
copy a:\*.*
and press ENTER.
- Start Windows. From the "Program Manager," open the "File" menu and select
"Run."
- In the dialog box, type
c:\ns\setup
and press ENTER.
If you see an error message saying you need to update your "win32s" before you
can install Netscape, download a newer version of "win32s" using Gopher. In
Gopher, select "Computing & Technology/Software Distribution/Windows
3.1/Internet Tools" from the Gopher menu.
