Student Leadership and Service Awards
Is your floor community the best on campus? Did you have a service project you think went really well? Now is the time to talk about! We’re collecting nominations for the Leadership & Service Awards.
All awards are listed below. Nominations are due by April 30, 2012 by 12:00 Noon and should be sent to Siobhan May, Student Engagement Coordinator for Residence Life, via email at skmay@udel.edu or mail to 5 Courtney Street.
Recipients will receive their awards at the Residence Life Student Leadership & Service Awards Reception. May 11th, 2012 from 3:00 – 5:00 in the Ewing Room in Perkins.

List of Awards:
Complex Community Council of the Year Award
This award is given to the Complex Community Council (CCC) that best accomplishes its stated goals/mission. The nomination letter should include the CCC’s goals and mission and provide detailed examples of: member or resident involvement in CCC goals; benefits of CCC actions to the complex; CCC contributions to the university; CCC group coherence; CCC participation in or support of Residence Life and/or university activities; member comments on all of these and/or how their experience in the CCC has made a difference in their life; and student and staff testimonials.
Complex of the Year
This award is given to the complex that demonstrates significant involvement by residents in leadership opportunities, programming, overall resident involvement in activities and programs, cohesion as a community, and student growth. This award will focus on the residents of the complex, not the activities of the staff. The nomination letter should include detailed examples of: resident involvement; student developed initiatives; contributions to the greater UD community; leadership opportunities organized and facilitated by residents or staff for residents; programming examples with impact on participants; partnerships with other complexes, RSO’s or departments; and student and staff testimonials.
Philanthropy Initiative of the Year – Single Group or Collaboration
This award is given to the community-service oriented program or initiative of the academic year which was developed by students and/or executed primarily by residence halls students, achieved its goals for impact on the philanthropic benefactor, notes specific gains by residents, and demonstrates the impact on the general University community. Nominations for this award may be staff-initiated but students must have been involved in the planning process AND the attendance of the event. This program should have also been well advertised and attended by students and/or the community. Up to two awards will be awarded – one for a service event implemented by a single group and one for a service event implemented through collaboration between two or more groups.
Philanthropic Leader of the Year
This award is given to an individual who has made contributions within our community through their efforts on campus, within the state of Delaware, and possibly beyond. The winner of this award will show self-motivation to not only complete service on their own, but also get others involved in service and raise awareness of a variety of causes. The winner should have inspired others to be active in community service too.
On-Going Philanthropy Initiative of the Year
This award is given to an on-going initiative that has had two or more installments over the Fall/Winter/Spring semesters which has demonstrated an impact during each event, was developed by students and/or executive primarily by residence hall students, achieved its goal for impact on the philanthropic benefactor, notes specific gains by residents, and demonstrates the impact on the general University community. The initiative does not have to be weekly or monthly, but the nomination should specify how many installments the initiative were implemented. This program should have also been well advertised and attended by students and/or the community.
Environmental Sustainability Initiative of the Year
This award is given to an initiative created to promote environmental sustainability during the academic year. The initiative was developed by students individually or as members of a group and should be a new initiative or a separate, student designed and implemented initiative that supports a larger program. This nomination should be student initiated and include a brief summary of the program, information about the community impacted by the program, sustainable efforts used to carry out the program, and community member testimonials. Staff testimonials are welcome but not required.
NOTE: The following awards must be STUDENT AUTHORED but may be done with the assistance of Residence Life staff members. One award per complex will be chosen at the complex level. Those winners will be forwarded to the awards selection committee for consideration for the overall winner in the category.
Community of the Year – First Year or Upper Division
This award is given to the floor, SIH community, or Green Team that demonstrates significant involvement of individual members as well as significant contributions by the community to the complex and/or University. The nomination letter should include detailed examples of: member or resident involvement in the community; benefits to the complex; benefits to individuals in the community; contributions to the university; and student and staff testimonials.
Complex Community Council Leader of the Year – First Year or Upper Division
This award is given to an individual who has served on the Complex Community Council and has demonstrated leadership and commitment to their Complex Community Council’s goals and mission above and beyond what is typically expected. The nomination letter should include detailed examples of: the leader’s contributions to the CCC; involvement in CCC and/or complex activities; change he/she has initiated in self, individuals, group, and/or the community; student and staff testimonials; and current overall GPA (must be 2.3 or higher).
Citizen of the Year – First Year or Upper Division
This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the community above and beyond what is typically expected of residents. This award is not for a staff member or a leader in the complex community council. The nomination letter should include detailed examples of: resident’s involvement in complex activities; change he/she has initiated in self, individuals or the community; demonstrated an understanding of how their actions impact others; contributed to the development of a sustainable community; student and staff testimonials; and current overall GPA (must be 2.3 or higher).
