Roommates

Having a roommate is a wonderful opportunity to learn from someone with a different background than your own and helps you develop negotiation and communication skills. Many students will have the chance to live with someone from a different country and will have the opportunity to deepen their global competencies while developing a friendship that spans continents. Our roommate matching system will place you with someone who has similar living habits, so try spending time together before requesting a room change.

A successful roommate relationship depends on mutual respect, open and honest communication, and the ability to discuss problems as soon as they arise. Residence Life will provide any interested roommate pair with a Roommate Agreement. The agreement will help you develop lines of communication, identify potential conflicts, and learn about each other's perspectives so that you can respect each other's living habits and make compromises.

Roommate Conflicts

If you are having difficulties with your roommate, we encourage you discuss the problem early, openly and honestly. The Residence Life website provides tips to establish a good relationship with your roommate and sort out the conflict on your own.

If you find that you and your roommate cannot reach a mutual agreement, contact your Resident Assistant (RA) or Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC)/Hall Director (HD). Our staff is trained to mediate conflicts, and may be able to help you and your roommate resolve the problem. Working through problems with your roommate is a learning experience. Although changing roommates is not always the best solution, you may submit a room change form if you cannot come to an agreement after working with your roommate, RA, and RHC/HD.

Room Changes

One of the best things about living on campus is that you are not bound to your assigned room as you would be if you signed a lease.  If you would like to move to a different area of campus, you may submit a room change request form.  Please review the different types of room changes before submitting the form.  If you have any questions or would like to discuss your options, contact your Residence Hall Coordinator/Hall Director or Housing Assignment Services staff member.

For a smooth room change, please follow the steps below:

  1. Discuss your plans with your current roommate.
  2. Meet with your Residence Hall Coordinator or Hall Director to discuss your situation and complete the request form.
  3. Wait for Housing Assignment Services to approve your request.
  4. Meet with your new Residence Hall Coordinator or Hall Director to receive your new room key.
  5. Move into your new room within 48 hours of approval.
  6. Return your room key to your current Residence Hall Coordinator or Hall Director.

Residence Hall Regulations and University Policies

Each residence hall at the University of Delaware contains the following items:

  • Extra-long single bed with an 80" mattress (students are required to provide their own linens) – call (302) 831-1141 to bunk your bed
  • Ethernet connection
  • Desk and chair
  • Wardrobe or closet
  • Wastebasket
  • Window treatment
  • Dresser

Policies

You are required to abide by all Residence Hall Regulations , the policies outlined in the Housing Agreement, and the Student Guide to University Policies. These exist to help create an environment in the residence halls that is conducive to community development and academic pusuits. Failure to abide by these will affect your status as a resident.

After June 1, 2012, all students are bound to the Housing Agreement (December 20 for Spring Admits). Students will be required to live on campus for the 2012-2013 academic year and must pay all associated costs.

  • Vandalism
