How to Motivate
Staff
If you’ve noticed that a staff member you used to rely on
doesn’t go the extra mile anymore, maybe you haven’t said “thanks” lately.
Showing appreciation for RAs does more than reinforce your image as a supportive
leader.
How Do We Motivate Staff To Program?
- Attend programs and be supportive of your
staff.
- Brainstorm ideas with them in staff meetings
and one on one’s.
- Discuss upcoming programs or what people
need help with.
- Distinguish Programmer of the Month by nominating
a staff member once a month.
- Show concern for upcoming programs by showing
interest and excitement.
- Encourage your staff to attend other RA’s
programs.
- Have RAs present programs with you.
- Recognize the good programs planned by your
RAs.
- Be enthusiastic – it will be contagious.
- Eliminate competition between staff members
– promote all programs.
- Support very creative ideas.
- Recognize the differences in programming
skill levels of your staff.
- Provide staff with resources, assist with
bulletin board and publicity ideas.
- Pair up RAs who have difficulty programming
with RAs who are creative and successful programs.
- Emphasize quality vs. quantity programs.
How Do We Hold Staff Accountable?
- Set clear expectations with staff in training.
- Set specific timelines with staff.
- Attend your staff programs.
- Encourage staff to hold each other accountable.
- Accurately evaluate programming skill in
performance appraisal of each staff member.
- Allow for program planning time in one on
ones and in weekly staff meetings.
- Establish a programming contract; give a
copy to your staff.
- Create a master calendar and keep it up
to date; reward staff on the visual program board in staff office.
- Ask residents how programming on their floor
is going.
- Set goals with staff on programming areas
monthly.
- Hold self accountable for excitement level
in programming.
- Ensure staff fill out forms properly.
What Do We Do When Staff Does Not Program?
- Find out why they did not program.
- Contract staff with specific dates.
- Provide additional instructions with future
programming.
- Don’t wait to approach delinquent RAs.
- Review rationale and expectations monthly.
- Explain implications of not programming
and motivate.
- Explain to RAs that the effect on the floor
is not positive.
- Letter in RAs file; Probation – documentation
– discuss this option with your complex coordinator.
