Residence Life Philosophy for
Working with Parents
The Residence Life staff considers parents to be partners in our efforts to provide service, support, and an educational experience to students.
We pride ourselves in our ability to help students and welcome contact from parents who wish to discuss problems. Our most common calls are from parents concerned about their student's social adjustment to college. We also receive numerous contacts from parents expressing concern about roommate issues.
As you work with our Hall Director and Complex Coordinator staff, it is helpful to be aware of the following:
- We strive to help all students and strongly believe that students themselves must take an active role in resolving any problem. This experience, though sometimes challenging, is often very rewarding for students. While we are open to discussing issues with parents, we must be able to work directly with the involved students in order to assist.
- When parents call with a concern, we generally share this information with their student. Asking us not to do so greatly limits our ability to resolve a situation.
- Roommate conflicts always have multiple perspectives and multiple truths. Before we can take action on a reported concern, we gather all perspectives. Our staff members are well trained in conflict mediation and can educate students on appropriate assertiveness, listening skills, and communication skills.
