About George Read

George Read, located on Laird Campus, is complete with modern technology access and state-of-the-art amenities. The residence hall is a ten-minute walk from Main Street and the Trabant University Center, and is home to Pencader Dining HallShuttle buses run to Laird Campus every five-to-fifteen minutes, providing George Read residents with easy access to the rest of campus.

George Read residents live in double and single-room suites with a connecting bath. Each suite has off-white walls, tile floors, window treatments, and adjustable heat and air conditioning controls, along with standard UD furniture.

Laundry facilities are available in each building, and every floor has common areas and/or study lounges for student use.

  • Only First-Year complex with suite style living and private bathrooms. 4 students share two bedrooms (2 students per room) connected by a shared bathroom.
  • Complex has air conditioning and heat that is controlled by the students living in each room.
  • Spacious lounges on each floor for group studying, programming and socializing. Most lounges in the complex have large white boards that help students complete group projects and study together as a community.
  • Complex Lounge in George Read North has a large projector screen for watching sporting events, movies, playing video games and can be used for any other fun programming activities that the students can plan for the community.
  • Quiet study lounges on the main floor of each building
  • Pencader Dining Hall is just a minute's walk from the George Read complex for convenient dining during breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Traditions
    • GR Speaks: A weekly program that brings various leadership or campus engagement opportunities into the halls for students to explore how they can become involved in the campus community! Traditionally we invite groups such as Study Abroad Ambassadors, the Blue Hen Leadership Program (BHLP), Healthy Hens cooking demonstrations, Blue Hen Ambassadors (BHA), and more!
    • Night on the North: this open-air celebration on the Laird Turf features novelty activities, carnival treats, music and most importantly, fun! The Complex Community Councils of Independence, George Read, and the Christiana Towers collaborate to bring this year-end party to all Laird Campus residents.
    • Service Partnership: with Jeanne Jugan Residence – every week we offer an opportunity to support the mission of the Jeanne Jugan Residence, a local home for low-income elderly. Your service to the residents at Jeanne Jugan can be through cards and crafting within the complex or by visiting the home to play bingo and interact with the residents!

    • Located on Laird campus in a residential community of neighboring upper-division complexes, which helps create connections between students.
    • Laird turf, located outside of Pencader Dining Hall and Independence complex, is available for recreational use by all students for playing sports, relaxing, and more!
    • Volleyball and basketball courts are located on Laird campus for all students to use!

History

Three buildings on Laird campus were named in honor of the three UD graduates who signed the Declaration of Independence: Thomas McKean, James Smith, and George Read. George Read was a lawyer and politician who served in the Continental Congress, as a U.S. Senator from Delaware and as Chief Justice of Delaware.
