As part of initial and on-going training for both Resident Assistants and Hall Directors, professional staff members develop and present information on a host of topics, including student development theory, confrontation techniques, motivation and staff management.
Professional staff members also instruct the discussion section of UNIV 320, a one-credit course for new Resident Assistants. This opportunity is usually offered during the second year of employment.
Each professional staff member receives $750 annually, to be used at his or her discretion, for professional development. Typically, these funds are used for membership fees in professional associations (ACPA & NASPA), attending annual conferences and purchasing subscriptions to relevant periodicals and newspapers.
During the year, a number of retreats, seminars and discussion sessions are planned by the Professional Development Committee. Past topics have included: Cross-Cultural Competence, Managing Group Dynamics and Is Student Affairs Really A Profession?
Located in the central office, the library includes professional journals, videotapes, newspapers and a myriad of books on topics including programming, team building, supervision, crisis management and diversity awareness.
Return to TopThe Course Fee Waiver Program allows you to take up to six courses per year at no charge. Doctoral programs are offered in many disciplines, including Educational Leadership, Business Administration and Psychology.
Continuing Education classes include certificate programs in such areas as Training and Employee Development, Supervision and Leadership and Web Master.
Personal health resources include fitness classes, nutrition counseling and weight management classes offered by the Wellness Center as well as use of the recently-renovated Employee Fitness Center.
A variety of lecture and performing arts series are offered on campus. Most are free or offer discounted admission for University staff.
Within the Office of Residence Life, professional staff members have the opportunity to serve on selection and training committees such as: Resident Assistant, Hall Director or Complex Coordinator. They may also choose to be work with the Alcohol or Diversity Committees or engage in a collateral assignment (i.e.: coordinate the RA Class or Chair a selection / training committee). Complex Coordinators also have the opportunity to create a collateral project in an area of professional interest.
Involvement in University-sponsored committees also exists. While not required, these committees offer an excellent opportunity to interact with other University departments. Professional staff members have served on such University committees as:
