Living Green
Please review these tips for living green without much effort. By altering a few practices, each individual can make a huge positive contribution to lessening UD’s environmental impact.
- Bring reusable plates, cups, and cutlery to Residence Hall Programs.
- When purchasing new linens, look for organic cotton or bamboo textiles.
- If your desk lamp burns out, replace the bulb with a CFL light bulb.
- Look for surge protectors with low-watt switch capabilities so you can conserve energy when electronics are not in use.
- Purchase products with energy star ratings, such as refrigerators, televisions, and microwaves.
- Turn off all electronics if you are not in your room. This includes lights and computers.
- Take reusable tote bags when shopping. You can use totes for more than groceries!
- Always wash full loads of laundry and when possible, wash clothing with cold water. It will save water and money.
- Look for toiletries that are biodegradable or in containers made from less plastic.
- Get a pitcher with a filter and use it to refill a water bottle.
- Visit the facilities website to learn what can be recycled through Single Stream Recycling and use the blue bin in your residence hall appropriately.
- In the winter, close your windows and turn your heat down.
- When purchasing paper towels, garbage bags, toilet paper, and printer paper, look for products that are made from post-consumer recycled materials. Better yet, strive for a “tree-free” room and buy hand towels and cloth napkins.
- Buy local products as much as possible. This minimizes resources necessary to ship products and helps sustain a healthy local economy.
- Keep on the lookout for Residence Life initiatives, such as the Carpet Recycling Program to responsibly dispose of unwanted items at the end of the semester.
