About Us

The mission of the Residence Life Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC) is to provide leadership to the department as the department contributes to the accomplishment of UD’s Climate Action Plan.  Attainment of this mission will occur through the use of environmental sustainability as a catalyst for student engagement and empowerment. The success of the ESC rests on expanding residence hall student awareness of and participation in unique initiatives. Moreover, initiatives are intended to be fun, educational, and creative in nature.

The overall ESC is led by a professional-level staff member who serves as Chair.   The chair appoints staff and student staff members to be “Green Guides”.  Green Guides (GG) are responsible for the execution of a specific Residence Life environmental sustainability initiative.   To do this, GGs lead a team of “Core Council Member”, who can be student, student-staff, or residential student volunteers who are passionate about a specific initiative.  Core council members can be on the ESC for the duration of their specific initiative, or the entire academic year.  The GGs schedule meetings, oversee the distribution of tasks, and report back to the ESC chair.  By utilizing this multi-tiered organizational model, we are able to offer leadership opportunities for students and staff to dictate the effectiveness and applicability of Environmental Sustainability programming.  Check out the rest of our page to see past successful initiatives and current initiatives.
