DELAWARE WOMENS CLUB BASKETBALL FALLS TO MARQUETTE

Delaware Women’s Club basketball faced off against Marquette for the Club Basketball National Championship, April 15, 2012 loosing by 2 in the final minutes. In order to get to the championship game, Delaware faced Old Dominion, and Virginia Tech in the Quart and Semi Finals, defeating Old Dominion 41-27, and Virginia Tech 47-41.

In the championship game Delaware dominated the first half and was up by 6 points at half time. Clutch inside play by Delaware and missed shots by Marquette led the Blue Hens to lead by as many as 12 points in the first half. Marquette had chipped away at the lead, down to 6 at the break at 22-16.

Neither team started the second half hot offensively, with no scoring in the first four minutes by each team. Delaware broke through with a free throw by All-Tournament Team member Meghan Phillips at the 15:20 mark. The Blue Hens added just 3 more points in the next 7 minutes, but still held a 26-20 advantage with 8:30 to play. That's when Marquette took over hitting a pair of three pointers and two free throws, taking the Golden Eagles on an 8-0 run that put Marquette up 28-26. After a Delaware free throw, Marquette hit another three taking a 31-27 lead with 3:30 remaining.

Sarah "Apples" Howie's three pointer with 38 seconds left brought the Blue Hens to within one at 31-30, but Marquette sunk pairs all their free throws to put them up 5. And a three-pointer at the buzzer by Delaware was not enough to push the Blue Hens into first as Marquette held on for the 35-33 victory.
