SEASON OPENER UPSETS ROLLER HOCKEY
The Fightin' Blue Hens survived what turned out to be a disappointing weekend in Broomall, Pennsylvania last weekend. After an undefeated preseason tournament, the Blue Hens had high aspirations going into the regular season. In their first matchup the team certainly got off on the right foot by dominating Cornell 8-3. Gerard Gallo scored 4 goals while captain Justin Kozak earned 4 assists. The Blue Hens matched up against undefeated Queens College next and experienced their first true test of the season. After falling down 3-0 early in the first, Jeff Strickland and Brad Wompierski each scored a goal to pull Delaware within one. Unfortunately, one goal was as close to the lead as they would get as the Blue Hens battled a fast paced game led by Kozak's two goals to eventually fall 7-4. Although suffering their first loss of the season, Delaware remained in good spirits after putting forth a strong performance against an opponent they knew would be difficult to bring down. The third matchup of the weekend was against the Binghamton Bearcats, the very team to send the Blue Hens home during last years Regional Playoff Tournament. Right from the start, Binghamton brought a physical game that resulted in numerous trips to the penalty box for both clubs. Although netting two power play goals themselves, shorthanded play proved to hurt the Blue Hens whose penalty kill allowed four goals. Down one goal and finding themselves shorthanded once again, Delaware hoped to continue the man-down magic they found the previous tournament against Scranton. With their own goalie pulled for the extra skater, Taylor McCracken scored a short handed goal after a scramble in front to tie up the game. Binghamton struck back quickly to score a goal just seconds after the penalty expired to put the Bearcats back on top with only 22 seconds remaining. Finishing the weekend 1-2, the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens are anxious to get back on the rink for four games this weekend
