CYCLING'S BEN ELLIOTT TAKES 4TH AT ANGLEFIRE
Cycling Club’s Ben Elliott competed in the ECCC Division One Downhill National Race this past weekend in Angelfire, New Mexico. After prelims he was seeded 10th with a time of 9:01. In the final he was able to shave a minute from his time finishing fourth overall with a time of 8:03 – 17 seconds off the first place finisher. The winning time for Division 1 (7:46) was claimed by Joey Schusler from Boulder, Colorado. Elliott’s time allowed UD to finish 22nd out of 35 teams for the Team Nationals Overall, not bad for one kid racing.
Elliot had this to say, “The track was pretty epic, 8 inches of snow in the top section. I’ve been racing since ‘05 and have never raced in snow. They actually put 800lbs of salt on the upper sections to try to melt the snow and ice. It was a fun track to race, but real tough as it was very pedally in the mid and lower sections, which was not helped by all the mud. After every practice run we had to wash all the mud off our bikes just to keep the tires rolling and drivetrain shifting, it was pretty nutty.”
