Intramural sports are competitive sport events run through the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services. The Intramural Program offers opportunity for students and employees to compete against others from the University community in various sports ranging from common team sports like basketball and soccer to individual sports like badminton and table tennis. Please check the list of sports offered to see if there is something you are interested in. If there isn't, don't hesitate to email us and let us know what events you would like to see offered.
2. How do I sign up for an Intramural Sport?
Check the Calendar or Sports Offered page to see when registration is open for the sport you are interested in. Then, during that time, come by the Intramural Office, 134 Carpenter Sports Building (Little Bob) during the hours of 12noon and 8pm and sign up.
3. What do I need to sign up for an Intramural Sport?
To sign up for an individual sport (tennis, badminton, etc.) you just need yourself, the registration form, and your $5 bond. To sign up for a team sport there are two ways. You can act as a team captain and sign up a team. For a team you need the $50 bond and the registration form. If you want to play a team sport but don't have a team you can sign up as a Free Agent.
4. How do I get the registration and roster forms?
You can stop by the Intramural Office and pick them up or download them from our website (click the link for forms) and print them out at home.
The roster is a form that tells us who is on your team. It also serves as a liability waiver. Each team member will need to come by the IM office and sign the roster. Failing to do so will invalidate them from participating on your team. Players may only play on one team for each sport. (A Men's Blue league and a Men's Gold league are considered the same sport.) (However, we consider coed leagues and same sex leagues different sports. So a player may play on one men's or women's team, and also one coed team.) Once a player is on a roster they are not allowed to be removed. Each roster is limited to 16 players (20 for softball and outdoor soccer.) So to keep a team under the limit don't put players on your roster until you know they will be playing for your team.
The bond is a refundable deposit that a team or individual puts up to hold their spot in the league. Your bond will be refunded at the end of the season (it will be transferred back into your FLEX account) if you do not forfeit any games.
If you forfeit you will lose half of your forfeit bond ($25). A second forfeit will result in a team losing the remaining $25 and being dropped from the league. If you know you cannot make a game your team can call in a default.
You forfeit by showing up late (you have a 5-minute grace period after the posted game time but if you miss that you forfeit), not showing up at all, or not having the minimum number of players ready by game time.
9. Why are you so strict on the game time forfeit rule?
We have to worry about all of our teams not just yours. We understand things happen and that's why you get a 5 minute grace period. There is another team there to play you and they might have class after your game and they need to get started on time. And we also have other games after yours to get in before time is up (darkness or the building closing.)
A default can be called in by contacting the Intramural Office 24 hours in advance of your game. If you call in a default you will be charged with a loss but not a forfeit. (A default can only be used once per season, and not during post-season play.)
11. What is the purpose of redepositing the bond and the default option?
We want to make everyone's experience is enjoyable. There is nothing worse than a team arriving for a game and the other team not showing up. Making teams redeposit their bond not only gives teams a second chance but also shows that they are committed. It also gives the rest of the teams they are supposed to play, an assurance that they will show up. The Default option allows the office time enough to contact the other team and let them know they don't have a game so they don't show up to a forfeit.
12. How do I get my bond back?
If your team didn't forfeit throughout the season, (or you had a forfeit, redeposited your bond and then didn't forfeit again), your team will have its bond refunded. The captain on the registration form will be credited with $50 in his/her FLEX account after the end of the season. Also note; there are no CASH withdrawls from a FLEX account, (i.e. you cannot take your UD1 card to the ID office and withdraw your bond in cash.) Please visit http://www.udel.edu/ud1flex/term.htm to see information about the FLEX account.
13. What sports are available?
Check out the Sports Offered link.
14. What do I do if there is a sport I want to play that isn't offered?
Just get in touch with us. The sports we offer are always changing. There are some sports we just cannot offer but within reason we will try to offer any sport that there is a big enough demand for. Without you letting us know what you want to play we won't know.
15. When and where are games played?
Most field sports are held on Frazer Fields (right behind the CSB.) In-Line Hockey is held at the Rink right across from Trabant and Outdoor Soccer is held at Rullo Stadium (turf field on the Athletic Complex.) All indoor sports are held in the CSB. Times differ between sports but generally league events run Sunday - Thursday with teams playing twice per week (mon/wed, tues/thur, or double headers on sunday.) Times start at 3:30pm and run until 10pm for outside sports and until the CSB closes for indoor events. Outdoor Soccer is an exception-we do not start playing until around 8pm and finish around midnight. We also offer one-day and weekend tournaments. Those are on the weekends and start around noon.
For the outdoor events the decision to cancel games is made at 2pm. You can call the office to check if games are to be played. If we decide to play and then bad weather develops the games will be suspended at the field. (When in doubt call the office or come ready to play.) We will play as long as conditions are not dangerous (i.e. lightning.) The best way to reach us for rainout information is through Instant Messenger you may reach us through the screenname udintramurals.
17. How many games will I get?
Each sport is different, but generally you will play 2 or 3 regular season games, plus the tournament. (for each League)
18. I have played through the league what about the post-season?
We offer championship tournaments for all league sports at the end of league play. We take as many teams as court space and time will allow. Usually we get all teams that want to play in. Tournaments play at the same times as the regular season games in most cases. Your team will be playing teams from other leagues and will be playing at times you are not used to playing. Please check the schedule regularly. The Tournament will begin the day after the last day of the season. (To be eligible for the post-season teams must have an active bond on file and turn in a playoff registration form by the deadline and attend the Playoff Captain's meeting..)
Anyone can play as long as they are a UD student, UD faculty, or UD staff with access to CSB. If in doubt of whether you have access, bring your UD ID card and have it swiped at the front desk. If you are in, you are in.
20. Can I add players after the start of the season?
Anyone can add to a team through the regular season (up to the maximum for that sport.) A player must be on the roster before the team's last regular season game to play in the playoffs. To add a player they just have to come by the Intramural Office during regular hours and sign the roster. They can do this the day of the game, but it has to be done before they play.
Stop by the office (134 CSB,) call 831-2539, or email us.
22. What's the deal with League 1 and League 2 (what's new for fall 04?)
We have split leagues in half. For example, for Flag Football Fall 03 team were placed into pools of 6 teams, which gave them 5 regular season games. With the tournament following the league play. For Fall 04 Flag Football there will be a registration for League 1 in which teams will be placed into pools of 3 or 4. (Giving teams 2 or 3 regular season games.) Then there will be another registration for League 2 in which teams will again be placed into pools of 3 or 4. (Giving teams another 2 or 3 regular season games.) Then the tournament will follow. Teams will qualify for the tournament by participating in either League 1 or League 2. Teams may play in either League or choose to play in both. (If a team plays in both they will in essence get the same number of regular season games that they have gotten in the past.) To register for League 1 Team Captains should come to the office like they have done in the past to pay the bond and turn in all forms. (See info above) If a team wishes to play in League 2 also, they just need to come in and fill out a re-registration form during the registration time and attend the captain's meeting. (The team bond will carry over from League 1.) For League 2 there will be another Captain's Meeting at which game times will be chosen again. (Remember teams that register first get first choice.) So your team's game time may be different from League 1 to League 2. If a team doesn't wish to participate in League 2 they will still be eligible to play in the post-season tournament. (To play in the playoffs teams just need to fill out a playoff request form and turn it in by the deadline.) If a team doesn't play in League 1 they will still be able to get in some games by registering for League 2. They should come to the office during the registration times, pay the bond, turn in all forms, and attend the captain's meeting. Then your team will be eligible to play in the post-season. Players will only be eligible in the post-season for one team. (For example, if a player plays on the Busters in League 1, and plays for the Monsters in League 2 they would only be able to play with the Monsters for the playoffs..
