Research Interests

Work in my laboratory focusses on neural control of aging, with particular attention to the poor thermoregulatory responses of old rats.  Old rats, like old humans, do not get as high a fever as do young animals when they are infected.  We work on this from an endocrinological (stress) and immunological perspective.  Other areas of interest include stress an development, behavioral thermoregulation, sleep, cognitive deficits in aging, and gender differences.  In fact, there are many areas of interest, depending on where the phenomena take us and what interests the people in the lab.

In general, students in the lab have a primary project, and also collaborate with others on their projects. This allows students to get a wide range of techniques and knowledge and also gets their names on several research papers, as both first or later author, something that is very important when looking for a postdoctoral fellowship or a job. At present the lab includes Maria Florez-Duquet, a senior postdoctoral fellow, Khalid Benamar, a postdoctoral fellow from Morocco (Ph.D. from the University of Seville) and Elizabeth Peloso, the best lab technician in the world. We also have four undergraduates in the lab doing honors' projects or senior theses.  The lab is beautiful, having been built from scratch about three years ago. We collaborate with the laboratory of Dr. Seymour Levine, a world-famous neuroendocrinologist, who came here from Stanford to head our Neuroscience Program, and Dr. Carlos Plata-Salaman, who is the Head of CNS pharmacology at Johnson and Johnson.
