Bond Bill Hearing
Legislative Hall, Dover
February 27, 2013
I thank the Hon. Robert Venables, the Hon. Quinn Johnson, and all the members of the Joint Committee on Capital Improvement for this chance to speak today. Some colleagues from UD have accompanied me, and they’ll be happy to join in answering your questions following the presentation.
You know many of the people assembled here, but I’d like to introduce (or re-introduce) someone many of you have long known—Jeff Garland, who came to UD last summer as vice president and University secretary. You’ll be seeing a lot of Jeff in Dover, and we’re thrilled he’s joined UD.
Deborah Hayes is our new vice president of communications and marketing; she’ll be helping us get UD’s good news out to Delawareans. And with Mike Jackson’s abdication to the Controller’s office, Drew Knab has just taken over as interim budget director.
We announced a few weeks ago that Domenico Grasso will be our new provost, starting August 15. He’s currently vice president for research and dean of the Graduate College at the University of Vermont. I know he looks forward to getting to know you and your colleagues in the General Assembly.
Proposed FY14 Capital Appropriation
First, I want to thank Gov. Markell for earmarking $3.2 million in his proposed budget for University laboratory renovations—a significant capital need.
We’ve identified several labs that require renovations to modernize outdated buildings and building systems and meet current safety requirements. I’ll highlight two of our most critical priorities: Lasher Lab in Georgetown, which the Governor identified in his recommended capital budget, and a second Southern Delaware project, Cannon Lab on the Lewes campus.
