Joint Finance Committee
Legislative Hall, Dover
February 4, 2013
I thank the Hon. Melanie George Smith, the Hon. Harris McDowell, and the entire Joint Finance Committee for this chance to present UD’s FY14 operating budget request. And I thank the committee for its support during last year’s budget cycle.
Many people from UD have accompanied me, and they’ll be happy to join me in answering your questions following the presentation. You know most of the people assembled here, but I’d like to introduce our interim provost, Nancy Brickhouse, who took over as chief academic officer last summer. I thank Nancy for taking on such a critical role and doing a terrific job with it.
We announced last week that Domenico Grasso will be our new provost, starting August 15. He’s currently vice president for research and dean of the Graduate College at the University of Vermont. I know he looks forward to getting to know you and your colleagues in the General Assembly.
The UD community is grateful that—under still-difficult economic conditions—we see no reduction to the University in the Governor’s proposed budget. We deeply appreciate his efforts to keep higher education funding stable given the fiscal challenges the state still faces.
However, should additional revenues become available, we do have a few requests that align closely with our institutional priorities.
