::Publishing Your Syllabus on the Web

Six Easy Steps

  1. Create a folder on your computer to store all the files associated with your syllabus. While you are working on your syllabus, be sure to save all associated files in this folder.
  2. Prepare your publishing location by following the instructions for departmental directories (on www.udel.edu) or personal directories (on copland.udel.edu).
  3. Choose a template.
  4. Create your syllabus adding text, links, and graphics.
  5. Publish...
  6. Update protection codes.

Step 1: Create a Folder on your computer to store all the files associated with your syllabus.

While you are working on your syllabus, be sure to save all associated files in this folder.

Step 2: Prepare your publishing location

Follow the instructions for departmental directories (on www.udel.edu) or personal directories (on copland.udel.edu).

Step 3: Choose a template

Select one of the templates available.

Click on the template thumbnail image to open the template in your browser.

Save a copy of the syllabus template in the folder you created for your syllabus files:

  • From Internet Explorer,
    1. Choose File > Save As
    2. In the "Save as type" field, choose "Web Page, HTML only (*.htm;*.html)."
  • From Firefox,
    1. Choose File > Save Page As
    2. In the "Save as type" field, choose "Web Page, HTML only."
  • From Safari,
    1. Choose File > Save As
    2. In the "Format" field, choose "Page Source."

*Make sure to name the file without spaces or punctuation.

Step 4: Create your syllabus

Now you are ready to modify the template. You can use any web editor or text editor for this task.

If possible, avoid:

  • using a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Word Perfect
  • using Microsoft FrontPage and FrontPage extensions on UD's UNIX web server
  • unintentionally editing HTML code when using a text editor (such as Notepad or SimpleText). HTML code <appears within brackets, like this>.

During the editing process, the images that appear with your syllabus may not be visible. This is as will not impair your ability to customize the syllabus text as needed. To see your syllabus as it will appear online, simply test your page within a browser.

  1. Replace the placeholder syllabus information in the templates with your own text. Add and replace as much information as necessary. As you type, space is added automatically to accommodate the information. Be sure to delete any template text you do not replace.
  2. Creating an e-mail link. Email links can be created one of two ways. The easiest way is by using your web editor's link creation method to create a link and then typing mailto:yourUDelNetID@udel.edu into the link field. The second method uses Javascript to create an e-mail link that is difficult for spambots to find. We have provided detailed instructions on how to do this.

Step 5: Publish

Once you have finished editing your page, you are ready to upload it to a web server. If you are uploading to MyCourses, you can do this using WebDAV or through MyCourses using the Manage Files utility. If you are uploading to Copland or another UD server, Secure Shell (SSH) is recommended.

There is no need to upload the image files associated with your chosen template. The syllabus pages provided here are designed to display images that will be retained within PRESENT's web site.

Once you have published your page, you will want to view it in a web browser to see how it appears to the world. If you published the syllabus to your personal web folder, the Internet address will be:

http://udel.edu/~your_UDelNetID/filename.html

If you published your syllabus to a departmental directory, the Internet address will be:

http://www.udel.edu/directory_path/filename.html
