2008 Summer Faculty Institute:
Macintosh Technology Bundle

Overview

The technology bundle, for faculty participant's future teaching endeavors at the University. The technology bundle will be the property of the faculty member's department. Components include hardware, installed and recommended software, and additional options which can be purchased at laptop recipient's department expenseThere is no cost for faculty who participate in the week-long program.

Hardware

Faculty who participate in the week-long program and indicate a preference for Macintosh platform technology will receive a current model Apple laptop. The computer will be provided to accepted participants prior to the Institute and used throughout the week.

The MacBook Pro features (subject to change) are:

  • MacBook ProOperating System: Mac OS X v. 10.5 Leopard
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4 GHz, 3MB shared L2 Cache)
  • Screen: 15.4-inch (viewable) widescreen LED anti-glare display with 1440 x 900 resolution
  • Graphics Controller: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM
  • Memory: 2 GB (667 DDR2, 2 SO-DIMMs, upgradable to 4 GB)
  • Hard drive: 200 GB (5400 RPM, serial ATA)
  • Optical drive: 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Ports: (2) USB 2.0, (1) FireWire 400, (1) FireWire 800, Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000), 802.11 b/g/n wireless, Bluetooth wireless
  • Battery life: up to five hours
  • Weight (computer only, without case or accessories): 5.4 pounds
  • Other: built-in iSight camera, Apple Remote with Front Row software

The complete hardware complement is expected to include:

  • Laptop carrying case
  • Noise-canceling headset
  • Flash memory stick
  • Laptop mouse with retractable cable
  • and a classroom cable connection kit with VGA, Ethernet, and audio cables.

Software

A software bundle will be included to allow faculty to apply all of the teaching models and instructional strategies that will be demonstrated throughout the week.

Required software.
The following required software needs to be installed by you before arrival on the first day of the institute.

You must register your computer for network access twice:

  from a wired location, log in at http://www.udel.edu/network and follow options for "register this computer"
  from a wireless location, log in at http://www.udel.edu/network and follow options for "register this computer"
Log in at UDeploy to download and install the following three required programs:
  Firefox web browser.
Firefox is an alternative web browser, which is necessary for sites that do not work with the Safari web browser.
  McAfee Virex
This program provides virus scanning, disinfecting and protection. All computers that connect to the Internet must have current anti-virus software.
  Microsoft Office 2008.
This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage. The 2008 version of Office is recommended, along with a high-speed connection for this large download.
 

Pre-installed Apple software.
These programs are already installed on your MacBook Pro. Registration and/or serial number confirmation may be requested upon first use.

Optional software.
These programs may be worth downloading and installing, depending upon your individual needs. All are free.

  Audacity
Free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. Be sure to download and install the separate Lame library for MP3 encoding.
  Fetch, available from the UDeploy web site.
A point-and-click FTP (file transfer protocol) client only available for Macintosh.
  Java Runtime Environment, available from the UDeploy web site.
Allows you to run Java-based applications in your web browser and other applications.
  Bloglines (account required) news and RSS aggregator. Many alternatives exist, including most current web browsers.
  Mathematica 6.0.1 by Wolfram Research, available from Research Database Management Services (RDMS) at UD.
  Thunderbird is an e-mail client by the makers of the Firefox web browser.
  Real Player media player, available from University Media Services.
  Second Life Install this program if you plan on attending any Second Life sessions during the summer institute.
  Virtual Private Network (VPN), available from the UDeploy web site.
Allows University members to access restricted resources.
  VLC media player can handle additional media formats not support by QuickTime or RealPlayer.
 

Other options.
These can purchased with support from your department.

  AppleCare Protection Plan
Strongly encouraged or, as Larry Larraga says, "don't leave home without it!" This can be purchased anytime during the first year of ownership.
  Apple QuickTime Pro
Upgrades the standard QuickTime player to have additional features.
  Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter
An additional adapter allows you to leave one installed at your desk and have one to ready to travel in your laptop case.
  Apple USB Modem
For situations where you may still need a modem or a fax, an Apple USB Modem is a required accessory.
  External hard drive
Consider purchasing an external hard drive for data backup, using Timeline or another method.
  Windows XP or Vista operating systems, using BootCamp, Parallels, or VMware
If you are interested in installed the Windows operating system on your MacBook Pro, you will need to purchase a Windows license. Additional instructions will be available during the summer institute.
