mark your calendar Winter Faculty Institute opens January 8

UD's 2007 Winter Faculty Institute kicks off Monday, Jan. 8. The event features two outstanding presentations about technology's potential to assist in curricular reform and student portfolios to enhance and deepen learning. The daylong event will be held in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.

Robert LueMorning program

8:30 a.m.
Continental breakfast for participants

9 a.m.
Robert Lue, Director of Life Sciences Education, and Dean and Senior Lecturer in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University, will launch the institute with his keynote address on “Technology's Role in Curricular Transformation.” The keynote will explore how technological innovation can be used as a means of changing both how and what we teach.

10 a.m.
UD faculty members will discuss practices and on-campus multimedia resources for learning, including an introduction to UD's New Student Multimedia Design Center:

  • April Veness, associate professor of geography, visiting professor, University of San Carlos, Guatemala, and Sarah Archbald, UD graduate in liberal studies research, will discuss the "Role of Videography in Geographic Teaching, Research And Service: Observations Of An Accidental Advocate"; and
  • Ralph Begleiter, distinguished journalist in residence, communication, will discuss “Going Hollywood: Student and Faculty Use Of Multimedia In Teaching And Learning.” He will explore how to catch the attention of image-focused students by incorporating made-to-order movies and animations in coursework, review the building blocks to good multimedia faculty presentations and offer ideas on how to encourage students to use UD's new Student Multimedia Design Center for their course assignments.

11:00 a.m.
Interactive session led by Dr. Lue on "How to make multimedia development an integral part of the teaching community."

Noon-1:30 p.m.
Lunch and facilitated discussions led by experienced UD staff and faculty on uses for the new Student Multimedia Design Center, Personal Response Systems (PRS)-also called “clickers”-other interactive classroom tools, student engagement and emerging technologies.

John ZubizarretaAfternoon program

1:30 p.m. Provost Rich will highlight aspects of the recently announced University of Delaware Commitment to Delawareans.

2:00 p.m.
John Zubizarreta, professor of English, director of honors and faculty development, and former dean of undergraduate studies at Columbia College in South Carolina, will discuss his book Learning Portfolios: Reflective Practice for Improving Student Learning.

The Winter Faculty Institute is a month-long series of events designed to enhance teaching and learning using technology. The institute is co-sponsored by the University of Delaware Library, Center for Teaching Effectiveness, Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education, Office of Educational Assessment, IT-User Services and the College of Arts and Sciences.

mark your calendar January workshop on managing student writing

Posted November 13, 2006 Registration is open now through Dec. 1 for “Managing Student Writing In Your Course,” an interactive Winter Session workshop for faculty. Being offered from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Jan. 16-18 at the UD Writing Center, participants who complete the workshop will be awarded $500 in professional development funds.

Melissa Ianetta, director of writing at UD, and Dee Baer, consultant for writing in the disciplines at UD, will facilitate. Each day's session will include mini-presentations, discussions and time to work on individual syllabi and writing assignments.
