2006 Winter Faculty Institute update

January 20, 2006 As part of this year's Winter Faculty Institute, User Services is offering a number of workshops centered around the theme, "How do you know your students are learning?". In addition to MyCourses tools, the workshops will explore emerging new technologies that may complement a MyCourses site.

UD Computational Science Day

January 18, 2006 UD Computational Science Day, February 14, 2006, is a one-day conference for UD faculty, staff and students on a broad range of scientific, engineering, and information science research. Its goal is to bring together UD's computational science community to meet, share experiences, and find opportunities for new research collaborations.

Talks and poster presentations will focus on research involving high-performance, distributed, grid and parallel computing, interactive development environments, scalability issues, and discussions of their underlying applications or related UD courses.

Using Personal Response Systems to Obtain Student Feedback in Large Lecture Classes

January 18, 2006 If you are curious about Personal Response Systems (PRS), also known as "clickers," then consider attending this Winter Faculty Institute session on Thursday, January 26, 11-noon, in 208 Gore Hall.

Join Dr. Diane Herson and Dr. Carlton Cooper, Biological Sciences, and Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo, Psychology, as they explore the potential uses and abuses of PRS in large lecture classes. They will present data on student perceptions of the systems and will all answer the question, "Next time I use a PRS system, I will ......."

You are invited to stay through the lunch hour and interact informally with the presenters and PRESENT staff.  A box lunch will be provided at noon.

Proposal deadline for Lilly conference extended

January 10, 2006 Lilly conferenceThe deadline for proposals from UD faculty interested in making a presentation at the 2006 Lilly-East Conference on college and university teaching, Friday-Saturday, April 7-8, at Clayton Hall has been extended to Wednesday, Feb. 1, according to Gabriele Bauer, assistant director of UD’s Center for Teaching Effectiveness and coordinator of the conference.

“Learning So Everyone Teaches” is the theme of the conference, which is being hosted by UD and cosponsored by Towson University.

Lilly Conferences bring together faculty from different disciplines and types of academic institutions and provide a forum for demonstrating, modeling and discussing innovative teaching practices at the university level.

In the news: Keynote address sets attendance record

January 6, 2006 Dr. BrescianiUD’s Winter Faculty Institute kicked off Jan. 4 with the keynote address, “You’re teaching—What are your students learning?” by Marilee Bresciani, assistant vice president for institutional assessment at Texas A&M University. Bresciani discussed how to embed student assessment tools and methods into faculty’s day-to-day tasks.

More than 120 UD faculty, deans and chairpersons, the largest group of participants in the Winter Faculty Institute’s 11-year history, attended the event held in the Perkins Student Center.
