By interacting with material, students learn to draw connections between
their own experiences and knowledge and what is being presented. They
frequently learn a new vocabulary, new concepts, and then they apply
this information to new situations. Active engagement in learning involves
the student as an active rather than a passive participant in the learning
experience asking him/her to recognize patterns and draw conclusions.
Mechanisms that provide means for students to self-test their mastery
of material can be beneficial in this experience.
