Game/Simulation contest criteria

Overview

Entries will be judged based on three broad criteria. In order of importance, these are: learning objectives, impact and evaluation.

Learning Objectives

Contest entries must be very clear on this point. What do you expect students to learn, and how will that learning be enhanced relative to what your current students achieve? Here are some types of improvement you might consider.

+ Time on task

Do you expect students to spend more time and therefore learn more than your current students do on average?

+ Efficiency

  • Do you expect students to learn about as much as they do now, but in less time than they currently spend?
  • Will your students learn about what they do now, but do it outside of class, so as to free up class time for other things?

+ Learning Styles

Are you expecting to reach a segment of your student population that appears under-served by your current teaching methods?

+ Enrichment

Does this project offer your best students an opportunity to advance beyond the standard course content? Does it do so while still offering the average student the opportunity to master the basics?

+ Automaticity

Is the learning objective one that students must "know cold"? Do you expect this project to impact not only what students know and can do, but how quickly and effortlessly they can access that knowledge? If so, why is this depth of knowledge important to your students?

Impact

Preference will be given to projects that will serve larger student populations, or those which can be expected to retain their usefulness for many years.

One way to increase impact is to design a project that can be updated by a faculty member as needed. For example, if your content contains quiz questions, images, or text-based instructions, these can be made editable by the faculty member. As information changes, or new emphasis is required, the project can be maintained at the cutting edge.

Evaluation

Preference will be given to projects that include plans to measure impact on the targeted learning goals. This is not a mandatory element.
