The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project

 
The Apollo-Soyuz Program was a joint project  between the United States and the U.S.S.R.  In 1972 Nixon and Kosygin agreed to a cooperative program in space.  On July 15, 1975 the Russian Soyuz and the American Apollo took off.  On July 17 they maneuvered to rendezvous and docked together.  The two crews conducted various experiments together over the course of two days.

 
                                            GOALS

          1) To test the compatibility of rendezvous and docking systems
              for U.S. and Soviet spacecraft.

          2) To open the way for internation space rescue.

          3) To open the way for future joint manned flights.
