We surveyed the class to get an idea of what services people were using for communication on the computer, and why they were using them. The results were interesting.

Most people use Netscape or Outlook to check their email, exactly what we predicted. Followed by Pine, and then web services. Most people, over 50%, use their email choice because of ease of use. As you can see we are a society of convenience. About a fourth use their email choice because of the features provided. The last option of a lack of other resources we felt might be used by people who did not own a computer, and relied on the Unix server for email.

Everyone who used Instant Message unanimously used AOL/Netscape. If they didn’t use this they did not use Instant Message, and that was only 2 people. Indicating the widespread use of Instant Messaging as a form of communication, which is changing today’s society. The reasons for using Instant Message was very similar to email. The number one reason people are using Instant Meassge is for the ease of use. Followed by the resources provided by the Instant Messaging.

We found this survey to follow our predictions on the resources people are using, and their reasons for using the services. Our survey numbers would be a close representation to a University, but not to the society as a whole.
