Tapes
Sometimes
old ideas work best. At least that is what the National
Storage Industry Consortium (NSIC) thinks. On December 1, 1999
NSIC started a new program to look into the possibilities of storing large
amounts of data on magnetic tapes. Although the information concerning
the project is secret, some information was revealed in an article about
the program getting off to a fast start. The sponsors of the project
have decided on 5 topics they would like to research:
-
Media
mechanical stability
-
Tape
guiding
-
Minimization
of head-media spacing
-
Noise
in metal particle media
-
Disk-like
tape media
The
overall goals for goals for the program:
-
To develop
modeling, understanding, research tools, and data that will help the sponsor
companies advance their technology as fast as possible
-
To accelerate
our knowledge about fundamental limitations the technology will be facing
-
To devise
new approaches to circumvent such limitations
The
first quarterly meeting of the NSIC researchers will be held in March 2000
in San Jose, California.
