October 27-28
Co-Sponsored by the Virginia Instructors of Physics
The tentative schedule at this time is to begin Friday, October 27th in the afternoon with presentations followed by a dinner. Saturday will consist of further presentations, a VIP style Share Session and a workshop.
Presentations, scheduled to be 20 minutes in length, are currently being sought for the Friday and Saturday talks. Talks from physical science teachers, high school physics teachers, and college and university professors are welcome. This will be an opportunity to hear about physics and physics education grades 8-16! The Share Session will be an hour of fast paced presentations. These will be from 3 to 8 minutes in length. The presenter will show a demo, lab, or lesson and describe how it is used in teaching and provide all attendees with handouts. The handouts will provide all the details necessary to reproduce the demo, lab or lesson in your own teaching.
If you wish to partake in the Share Session, please go to http://www.vast.org/vip complete the appropriate form in lieu of an abstract and submit it to Mark Mattson, mattsome@jmu.edu, by October 11, 2006.
Attendees of the workshop will have the opportunity to work through a series of experiments developed by Dr Scott Paulson (JMU physics) and Andy Jackson (Harrisonburg High School) to introduce the Harrisonburg High School honors physics students to the world of nano-physics. Attendess will conduct 'traditional' high school physics experiments with regard to friction and electrical resistance and then explore the same concepts utilizing an atomic force microscope and a nano-manipulator.
