Nuclear Physics Detectors, from Quarks to Medical Instrumentation

Cynthia Keppel
Cynthia Keppel
Director, Nuclear and High Energy Physics Research Center
Physics Department, Hampton University

A partnership between Hampton University and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) has developed for the purpose of applying state-of-the-art nuclear detection techniques to cancer diagnostic instrumentation. Projects include devices used in melanoma surgery and imaging techniques for breast cancer diagnosis. An overview of the project will be given, from its roots in basic nuclear science at JLab to a discussion of clinical trials at local medical facilities.

Dr. Keppel recently received the 2000 Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council on Higher Education for Virginia as the youngest recipient ever. She is the spokesperson for four accelerator-based experiments at Jefferson Lab and has four patents or patents-pending for nuclear medicine instrumentation. Dr. Keppel is a National Science Foundation Early Faculty CAREER awardee.
