EPA
Conditionally Registers new Bt Corn Product (posted 5/30/01)
A new Bt corn
plant-incorporated protectant has been conditionally registered for use
until September 30, 2001. EPA granted this conditional registration
after reviewing the results of experimental trials, analyzing numerous
scientific studies looking at both human health and environmental impacts,
considering public comments, and consulting with FDA and USDA. EPA
determined that granting a conditional registration for this use would
not pose unreasonable risks to public health or to the environment.
The active pesticidal protein, Cry1F, can help protect corn crops from
European corn borer, Southwestern corn borer, Fall armyworm and black cutworm.
The product was developed by Mycogen Seeds (a Dow AgroSciences company)
and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. (a Dupont company). In conjunction
with EPa's ongoing comprehensive reassessment of all Bt plant-incorporated
protectants, EPA will use data from this time-limited registration as one
component of its comprehensive reassessment of all Bt plant-incorporated
protectants, scheduled for completion in September 2001. Check out
the Cry1F
fact sheet for more info.

has requested that the agency delete the following uses from Di-Syston
(disulfoton) product labels (including Di-Syston 68%,
Di-Syston 15% and
Dy-Syston 8): greenhouses, non-bearing fruit trees,
strawberries, raspberries,
Bermudagrass (seed crop) and triticale.
Decco, Cerexagri,
Inc. has requested that post harvest uses for apples be
deleted from the
Deccosol 125 label. It also requested that post harvest

be deleted from the Decco 254 Sanitizer label. Both of these former
Elf AtoChem products contain the active ingredient sodium o-phenylphenate.
Helena Chemical and Nufarm Limited requested amendments to formulations of 2,4-D LV Ester. Helena has asked that the label for aquatic weed control be deleted from the Barrage HF label and Nufarm has asked that drainage ditch-banks be deleted from the Weedone LV4 label.
Diazinon
(posted 5/30/01)
On May 7th, the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced an amendment to the list
of agricultural crops that may appear on diazinon labels. On January
10th, the EPA and Syngenta announced an agreement to maintain only 70%
of the current diazinon agricultural crop registrations. This would
eliminate the use of diazinon on the remaining 30% of currently labeled
crops. Strawberries, tomatoes, and spinach were among the crops scheduled
for cancellation.
Grower and USDA comments
submitted to the EPA (after that list was
published) indicated
a nationwide need for the application of
diazinon products
on strawberries, tomatoes, and spinach. This is in
addition to specialized
local needs for diazinon (scheduled for
cancellation) on
15 other crops in seven separate states (also indicated by
public comments
after the initial list was published).
As a result of this
public comment process, the EPA has allowed
manufacturers of
products containing diazinon to maintain nationwide uses for the three
crops. This announcement also indicated that the seven individual
states with specialized local needs may consider pursuing 24(c) registrations
for the 15 other crops mentioned in the announcement.
