Minutes – May 9, 2012

Mr. Garbini introduced Kathy Corbitt, Director, Employee Wellness and Manager, Employee Education and Development.
Ms. Corbitt spoke to the PAC members about their mission and the importance of having an Employee Wellness program. Employee Wellness is committed to improving and sustaining the overall health and well-being of the university community. They provide employees with the resources necessary to perform at their best and support their quality of life. Some of their goals are:
Ms. Corbitt encourages everyone to take advantage of the programs and services that they are offering. Employees who are receiving benefits receive $75 Wellness Dollars per fiscal year. Wellness Dollars can be used for a variety of health and fitness services that include incentive-based health campaigns, health screenings, nutrition programs, personal training, fitness assessments, fitness classes, lockers and more. Ms. Corbitt noted that wellness dollar utilization continues to increase every year. Employees are engaging in more physical activity resulting in a 300% increase in participation in group fitness classes since starting fitness classes in 2009.

Ms. Corbitt also talked about the programs that are being offered with Employee Education and Development. UD's Employee Education and Development programs are one way in which the University ensure that the most valuable asset, the employees, are prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
The Employee Education and Development website provides information on the different categories of training including organizational development, career development, leadership/management development, human resources, financial, work/life, wellness and equity and inclusion. Minutes of the March 14, 2012 meeting were approved as written.
A constituent would like to know why the Scrounge, Dunkin’ Donuts, and other food markets are not open during Spring Break, Winter Session, and other times when students are not in campus. According to the UD Dining Committee, when students are not on campus there is not enough customers to support the operation.
When will Transportation and Parking Services start to charge for Blue Lot parking? According to Richard Rind, Director, Transportation and Parking Services, they are waiting for Executive Committee approval of 2012-2013 permit prices. An extensive communication will be implemented when they receive approval.
Faculty Senate Report
The approval of the Office of Residence Life residential program for 2012-13 and the establishment of a new major in medical diagnostics were among the items approved at the regular meeting of the UD Faculty Senate, which followed the general faculty meeting.
Also at the Faculty Senate meeting, the following academic program changes and additions were approved:
University Provost Tom Apple told the senators that the University is winning more than 90 percent of its first choice in faculty hires and that UD has enjoyed two consecutive years of double digit increases in research funding.
Cindy Campanella, director of UD Alumni Relations, thanked college deans, department chairs and faculty for support during the past three Alumni Weekend events, and urged faculty to sign up for this year’s Alumni Weekend, to be held June 1-3.
Martha Buell, chair of the Faculty Senate Promotion and Tenure Committee and professor of human development and family studies, said the committee would like to continue working on refining the Faculty Handbook for promotion and tenure with the guidance of the will of the faculty.
During the consent agenda portion of the meeting, senators approved requests to add a new minor in health, physical activity and disability, and to add a minor revision to the bachelor of science degree in quantitative biology, as well as a graduate certificate in women and gender studies.
Senators also approved requests to revise minors in economics, electrical and computer engineering, art, music management studies, geology and coastal and marine geoscience.
Additional consent items receiving approval included revising the bachelor of biomedical engineering, health behavior sciences, the major requirements for the health behavior sciences degree and the major concentration for the bachelor of science in nursing baccalaureate for the registered nurse (RN).
Senators also approved changing the name of the concentration for sociology majors to the concentration in health and health services, and to revise the master’s and doctoral degree in sociology and criminal justice.
Elections for even-numbered districts will be held in June.
