New Students

New Students: Housing

Undergraduate international students are encouraged to live in University residence halls so that they can get acquainted with domestic students and become involved in their activities. Residence hall contracts are valid for an academic year and graduate housing contracts for a calendar year. If residing in a residence hall, do not come to campus a week or two early unless you're willing to pay a lot of money to stay in a motel.

Single graduate students usually rent rooms or apartments off campus. Rooms are usually furnished, but without kitchen facilities, and range from $400 per month in cost. Apartments are unfurnished and cost $500 or more per month (for a one bedroom). Furnishings for these apartments are usually acquired from second-hand stores or community people wishing to donate or sell their items. Furniture may also be rented. Single graduate students who rent rooms in the community often take their meals in University dining halls. Meal tickets are available and cost approximately $3,600 per academic year. They may be bought upon arrival from the University Dining Services, Student Services Building. Students living in dormitories are required to purchase a meal plan.

If you are interested in residing on campus, please refer to the University of Delaware's housing website at www.udel.edu/housing. If you do not have access to the web, contact Ms. Linda Carey, Housing Assignment Services, 5 Courtney Street, Newark, Delaware 19716, USA. Housing space is limited and availability is based on earliest application for housing and deposit.

If all campus accommodations are filled when you arrive, you will have to choose single rooms in private homes or apartments off campus. A list of available rooms and apartments are also located in Housing Assignment Services, but no arrangements can be made for these until you arrive in Newark. You will have the best chance of finding the kind of housing you want if you arrive a week or so before the new semester begins. Please plan to arrive a day or two before the mandatory OISS Orientation (see Announcements).

WARNING! Do not sign a lease until you arrive and see the room or apartment.
