New Students

New Students: Expenses

The average fees and living expenses for a single student at a moderate standard of living for the twelve month calendar year are $34,683. Students planning to attend both Summer Sessions and Winter Session should anticipate additional expenses of approximately $11,901 per year. If additional family members are accompanying the student, $3,000 additional should be included in the figures for each member.

Health Insurance

All international students are required to purchase health insurance through a University of Delaware group policy unless you can provide proof of comparable coverage by another policy. The average cost for the student only is approximately $1,705 per year. For students on J-1 visas, see insurance requirements for that program. Wives and children are also required to obtain health insurance and may be covered by the University of Delaware group insurance policy which costs approximately $4,153 for one dependent per year and $5,818 for two or more dependents per year for non-funded students, and $1,551 for one dependent per year and $4,507 for two or more dependents per year for funded students. Students are also required to pay for on-campus medical services through the Student Health Service ($242 per semester). Wives and children are not eligible for services at the Student Health Center.

Cars

Undergraduate students are not permitted generally to maintain automobiles on campus; but graduate students often buy a car after arriving in Newark. Remember that the cost of buying, insuring, and registering a car are not included in the above expenses.

Billing

If you receive a bill from the University in the mail, please disregard it. As new international students, you do not have to pay your bill until you arrive on campus and register for classes. You will not be charged a late fee. The only thing you are required to pay prior to arrival is the admission deposit (undergraduates only) and room deposit, if you have applied for on-campus housing.

As a general rule, students are expected to pay University bills in full as the time of registration. However, full-time students may pay 25% at registration, and the remainder in three additional installments with an additional charge. Anyone holding a University contract may sign a promissory note so that fees are pro-rated and taken from the bi-monthly pay check. PLEASE ARRANGE TO RECEIVE YOUR FUNDS SO THAT THESE OBLIGATIONS MAY BE MET! If the system of monetary exchange in your country or any other difficulty makes it impossible for you to pay University bills according to this schedule, notify us so that we may pursue other arrangements for payment with the Cashier's Office. Advise us as soon as possible if you will need certification of your acceptance at the University in order to complete exchange procedures. All students and faculty are advised, if at all possible, to have cash available for travel expenses and any emergency which might occur between arrival at port of entry and arrival in Newark. All students are assigned a temporary Social Security Number when applying to the University, if they do not already have a permanent number.
