New Students

New Students: Academic Information

The academic year consists of two 14-week semesters, running from early September until mid December, and from the beginning of February until the end of May. A third session, known as Winter Session, is an optional 5-week program running from the beginning of January until the beginning of February. Vacation periods occur at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Recess during March or April. Two five-week long summer sessions are also offered. Graduate students normally enroll for 9-12 credit hours in each long semester, while undergraduates enroll for 12-15 credit hours. As many as 6 credit hours may be taken each summer session. Six credit hours may also be taken during the Winter Session.

You are required to attend the Orientation Program for International Students, thus, you must make arrangements to arrive in Newark in time for the orientation meeting (see Announcements for date). We must advise you that you may encounter difficulties if you arrive late: CLASSES BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 6th .

Individual departments within the Graduate College may require that you take placement examinations in your field or that you attend special meetings for new students. Questions about such requirements or about other details of your academic program should be addressed to the chairman of your department. High airmail costs prohibit our sending University catalogs overseas; however, graduate students may obtain a catalog upon arrival from your department. Catalogs are also available on-line at www.udel.edu/catalog.
