Maintaining Visa Status: Academic Information
After you've settled in, you'll need to take care of academic matters including getting a course catalogue, advisement, registration, payment of University bills and other academic concerns. You may also wish to take English language courses, or to get help with your English writing skills. Please read this page for more information on all of these matters.
- Catalogs - Graduate students may obtain a course catalog from their Department. Catalogs are also available on-line at http://udcatalog.udel.edu/.
- Advisement - Undergraduate students should discuss their courses at the Advisement Center or with their faculty adviser. Your adviser should be able to answer any questions you have about your academic program. Graduate students should talk with the chairman or another faculty member of the department in which they will be studying as soon as possible after arriving on campus. Detailed information will be available to you through your department. Placement examinations may be scheduled in the individual departments.
- Registration - The registration procedure will be discussed thoroughly during the orientation program for international students. Assistance in registering will be available from your Academic Adviser. Students may "add" courses to their schedule prior to the date set for late registration. Courses may be "dropped" without penalty prior to a date set in the fall approximately one month before the end of each semester; students normally receive an "F" in courses "dropped" after this time. A fee is charged for each course that is "added" or "dropped" after the specified date.
- Payment of University Bills - All students pay their tuition and other expenses at the Cashier's office in the Student Service's Building located on Lovett Avenue. All students must pay the Health Service Fee and medical insurance is mandatory for all international students. The University bill may be paid in full or in installments. The installment plan involves four (4) payments but there is a charge for using this plan. For further information contact the Cashier's Office.
- Academic Concerns - You may want to the call the Registration Office, 831-2131, or stop over there at the University Visitors Center on 210 S. College Ave. for any of these situations:
- you need to add a course
- you need information about transferring credits
- English Language Courses - The English Language Institute is located on campus at 189 West Main Street (831-2674). They offer full-time instruction for a fee.
The Christina School District offers free English courses during the school year at Shue-Medill Middle School, 1500 Capitol Trail, Newark, DE 19711. Classes are offered two days a week, Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Proof of Delaware residency is required.
The English Department of the University operates a Writing Center to help students with written reports. It is located in the basement of Memorial Hall (Rm. 015) - 831-1168.
