The purpose of practical training is to allow F-1 students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge obtained in academic programs to a practical work experience. There are two different types of practical training: curricular practical training and optional practical training. The October 1991 revision of the F-1 student regulations by the INS eliminated the option previously known as pre-completion practical training.
