Requirements for Grant Certifications
Occupational Health and Safety

Researchers may be required to receive a signed certification from the DOHS verifying that their research will be conducted in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations pertaining to safety and/or environmental protection. The following requirements must be satisfied prior to obtaining the certification from the DOHS:

  • All research personnel must be current with applicable training as provided by the DOHS and their PI. At a minimum this includes Chemical Hygiene Plan and Chemical Waste Management training. It may also include Biological safety, Radiation safety, Laser safety, HF safety, compressed gas safety, etc. Refer to Safety Training for training requirements and options.
  • The research group must be up to date with facility inspections as required by their safety committee. All inspections must demonstrate that compliance is attained in each applicable facility. Refer to Quarterly Facility Inspections for information about required facility and laboratory inspections.
  • Research facilities will be subject to a spot inspection by DOHS to evaluate the level of compliance with applicable regulations. All items of non-compliance noted must be addressed as indicated.
  • Any permits that need to be obtained subsequent to the acceptance of the project by the granting agency must be provided to the DOHS.
  • Failure to adhere to the above requirements will result in refusal to provide the certification as required by the grant or revocation of an existing certification and subsequent communication to the granting agency.
  • Please plan to allow as much time as possible to address the above requirements prior to receiving your certification. The time required will be subject to the availability of OHS staff to conduct a spot inspection and at a minimum 24 hours to 48 hours for lab personnel to complete web-based training if required. A good rule of thumb would be a two week minimum advance notice of the need to have a signed certification unless you have recently completed the requirements for another grant.
