A Message from the President

The University of Delaware is deeply committed to diversity—diversity of thought and opinion, of people and perspective.  When we launched our Path to Prominence, we made diversity a guiding principle. We said the University of Delaware will foster an environment in which all people are welcome.  We said we will support critical thinking, free inquiry, and respect for diverse views. We said that equity, inclusion, and fairness will remain cornerstone UD values.

We made this commitment because we know it’s the only way …

  • to cultivate a dynamic educational environment;
  • to stoke intellectual curiosity and creativity;
  • to develop culturally competent and civically engaged individuals; and
  • to prepare professionals who are eager and equipped to live and work in a global society.

Only when we include the full range of human experience and expression do we create the kind of atmosphere that inspires rigorous thinking. And so—through the work of the Diversity Task Force and, now, the Diversity Action Council—we’re implementing recommendations critical to ensuring equity and enhancing diversity on campus.

But fostering equity and inclusion isn’t the work of a few. Each of us is responsible for practicing tolerance and civility, and for being open to those whose backgrounds, experiences, and opinions are unlike our own.

I look forward to working with you to build a more welcoming and more diverse campus—where unity thrives not despite our differences but because of them.
