About Us

Mission statement

The mission of the LGBT Community Functional Area is to promote equality specifically regarding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. This mission is vital to the University’s goal of being inclusionary to all people, and the LGBT Community Office works with the University to create a welcoming and safe environment through collaborative efforts in each of three initiative areas: outreach, advocacy, and activism.

History

In 1993, the LGBT Community Office was created to address concerns brought forth by the LGBT community at the University. A student LGBT organization, Queer Campus, conducted a March for Queer Improvement in which a list of demands for the queer community was brought to the administration. In response, President David P. Roselle opened an office dedicated to addressing such concerns. Today, the LGBT Community Functional Area continues to exist as an advocate for LGBT students, faculty, staff and community members.
