Hepatitis B

The University of Delaware recommends Hepatitis B vaccinations for all teacher education majors prior to their first clinical experience. When working in schools, it is possible for students who are participating in clinical experiences to come in contact with students' blood or body fluids with blood during accidents or following student altercations, bites, nose bleeds or cuts. The vaccine is very safe and effective. The vaccination consists of a series of three shots, with shots two and three being taken one month and six months following the initial shot. Many students have already received it since it is now part of routine childhood immunizations.

Varicella (Chicken Pox)

It is recommended that, if you have not already had Chicken Pox, you consider receiving the Varicella vaccine.

Tuberculosis (TB) Screening Test

A PPD (Mantoux) tuberculosis screening test is required by the State of Delaware Department of Education within 12 months "prior to beginning student teaching." The test must be documented, and follow up must be provided for all positive results by a health care provider. Test documentation must be provided to your instructor or to the Office of Clinical Studies prior to any teaching assignment.

All Vaccinations/Tuberculosis screening Test

It is recommended that all students participating in clinical experiences consult with their health care provider and make certain that all of their immunizations and tuberculosis screening tests are current. To prevent assignment or placement delays, students should complete TB testing and begin the Hepatitis B Vaccine series prior to arriving on campus. Vaccinations and TB testing can also be scheduled at the university Student Health Service.
