| IMPORTANT NOTE |
| Delaware is considering changing the regulations to require all student teachers to obtain a Criminal Background check before starting. Note that the implementation date has been changed. This will be effective for all placements which start after January 1, 2010. Please periodically check this website for more information. |
| As of January 2009, only those Delaware students teachers assigned to a school in the Brandywine, Catholic Diocese , Indian River, and Caesar Rodney School Districts are required to have a criminal background check prior to begining student teaching. Volunteers in some programs in Delaware
are required to undergo a criminal background check that does not involve fingerprinting. Please select those links to access district websites for more information. You will be requried to complete a state and federal background check at the Delaware State Police centers listed below. |
| Early Childhood majors should be aware that some child care centers/preschools will require a criminal background check before you can begin your placement. Check with your center/preschool director to see if a background check is required. |
| Students who wish to substitute are required to undergo a criminal background check, including fingerprinting. There is a processing fee. You should begin this process at least six weeks in advance of the date you would like to begin substituting. Applications will be processed at the locations and times below: |

| Payment must be made in the form of certified check or money order payable to the Delaware State Police. |
| The background check information for DE may be used for employment verification for a period of 60 days after issuance. |

NOTE - Some districts do now require a complete criminal background check before student teaching. Any student who need a background check should follow these steps:

Get a State of MD and FBI Application from the Office of Clinical Studies and a set of directions to complete the forms. |

complete the form as indicated
|
| - |
make an appointment at a local police department to be fingerprinted |
| - |
Mail the complete applications as directed with the required fees. |

NOTE |
There have been important changes to Pennsylvania procedures for background clearances. You must obtain three background checks (Act 114, Act 34, and Act 151) before you are cleared to student teach.
