UD is known internationally as a leader in problem-based, hands-on learning. The floor includes one problem-based learning classroom and two instructional labs. Unlike traditional lecture halls, problem-based classrooms group students together at shared tables for easier discussion and collaboration.
With classrooms and instructional laboratories side-by-side in the building, students will move freely back and forth between both, avoiding the disconnect between lecture content and lab work that can occur in more traditional settings.
Research labs and offices on this floor will be home to the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation (CCEI). Working in teams that pair faculty with students, CCEI is unraveling the science of converting biomass into fuel. CCEI is funded, in part, by the U.S. Department of Energy as an Energy Frontier Research Center, a federal initiative charting the future of energy in this country.
CCEI is one of four centers to be housed in the ISE Lab. The proximity allows for improved interdisciplinary exploration between CCEI, the Center for Energy & Environmental Policy, the Delaware Environmental Institute and the University of Delaware Energy Institute.
