Larry Dale Tazan Purnell, a Distinguished Lecturer for Sigma Theta Tau International a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and heads the Master's Program in Nursing and Health Services Administration. He teaches transcultural health care across several departments. Larry is also on the faculty at the University of Panama, Republic of Panama and Middlesex University, London, England. In addition to being an educator, he is also a nurse theroist, researcher, and consultant. He has written over 50 articles, more than 50 book chapters, and eight books, two of which are written in Spanish. His book, "Transcultural Health Care: A Culturally Competent Approach", based on the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence, had been translated into Flemish, French, Korean, and Spanish. This book won the prestigious Brandon Hill Book Award in 1998 and 1999.

His research, "Hispanic Health Beliefs and the Meaning of Respect Afforded them by Healthcare Providers", includes participants from all countries in Central America and Mexico and their cohort groups in the United States. This work is being funded by the United States-Aid for International Development, the Kellogg Foundation, and the State of Delaware.

Larry is on the board of the Transcultural Nursing Society, Global Society for Nursing and Health, and Delaware/Panama Partners of the Americas. His research and program grants total over $400,000. He has made numerous presentations in the United States, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Spain, Panama, Belize, and Great Britain.
