MURIEL E. GILMAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Muriel E. Gilman established the Muriel E. Gilman Scholarship Fund in 1997 to provide financial assistance to returning students majoring in Nursing. The Award is based on merit and financial need.

Muriel received a BA degree from Brooklyn College in 1944, a Master in Public Administration Degree from New York University in 1949 and an Honorary Degree in Public Administration from Goldey Beacom College in 1986. She retired as Executive Vice President of United Way of Delaware in 1988 and immediately began her second professional career as Consultant to the College of Health Sciences (CHS) to develop a campaign to establish a million dollar endowment fund for the college. After a successful campaign, she continued to work directly with the Dean on fund raising and special projects, including the development of the Visiting Committee and the Nursing Alumni Association. She now serves as a member of the CHS Visiting Committee.

Muriel is recognized as a community leader, advocate and philanthropist serving on many agency boards and committees with distinction. Among her honors: Inducted into the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame; Girls Inc. “She Knows Where She is Going” Award; Alexis deToqueville Humanitarian Award; United Way of Delaware Chairman’s Award; Children and Families First J. Thompson Brown Award; NCCJ Honoree; and with her husband received the Delaware State Chamber Josiah Marvel Cup Award and the Gerald E. Kandler ACLU Award; American Lung Association Leonard P. Lang Award; The Department of Children, Youth and Their Families Secretary’s Award for Inspirational Leadership; and more recently, The 21 st Century Fund for Delaware’s Children, Inc. established the Muriel E. Gilman Award in her honor to be granted annually to an individual in recognition of outstanding service to improve the lives of at risk children of Delaware.
