Click the image above to see the US Federal Trade Commission's Guide for Business about protecting PNPI. This information would be good for a University office to review. In summary, the FTC recommends that we build a data security plan using five principles:
  • Take stock. Know what person information you have in your files and on your computers.
  • Scale down. Keep only what you need for your business.
  • Lock it. Protect the information in your care.
  • Pitch it. Properly dispose of what you no longer need.
  • Plan ahead. Create a plan to respond to security incidents.
